New project, new acronyms

I’ve started a new project recently, which means there is a whole collection of new acronyms (institutions, experiments, technologies, etc.) to remember along with their relationships with each other. Here they are mixed in with ones I already knew, where nesting implies some form of hierarchical relationship:

• CERN: Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (European Organization for Nuclear Research)
  • LHC: Large Hadron Collider
    • ALICE: A Large Ion Collider Experiment (at CERN LHC)
    • ATLAS: A large Toroidal LHC ApparatuS
• LBL: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab
  • NERSC: National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center
    • PDSF: Parallel Distributed Systems Facility
    • HPSS: High Performance Storage System (at NERSC)
  • NSD: Nuclear Science Division
    • RNC: Relativistic Nuclear Collisions (dept.)
  • SDM: Scientific Data Management Research Group
    • BeStMan: Berkeley Storage Manager (an SRM implementation)
• BNL: Brookhaven National Lab
  • RHIC: Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
    • STAR: Solenoid Tracker At RHIC
  • RACF (aka RCF): The RHIC and ATLAS Computing Facility
    • HPSS: High Performance Storage System (at RCF)

Here’s a few more sentences about how they are related:

LBL’s RNC department is a member of both the STAR and ALICE experiments.  I’m helping RNC with moving data generated by the STAR, ALICE and ATLAS projects from BNL to NERSC, for analysis on the PDSF cluster, then back again (hopefully using the BeStMan), to and from the HPSS on either side.
