As part of the Distributed Systems Group's Spectro-Microscopy Collaboratory project, we have developed a new mbone videoconferencing tool, confcntlr. This program is a conference controller which is intended to allow easier access to, control of, and coordination of a videoconference between remote sites.
confcntlr should be run on all the machines participating in a videoconference session and used to control the video and audio portions of the conference. confcntlr was developed for use with vic and vat. confcntlr is a graphical user interface and communication tool. Through the graphical user interface, you can initiate actions and set the controls for the video and audio. After confcntlr is started, confcntlrs running on remote hosts can communicate with it to start or stop conference sessions or to change settings for a session that is already running. Requests and replies between confcntlrs are exchanged over the internet. Messages between video or audio sessions and confcntlr on the same host are sent via the local multicast (the "Conference Bus").
Once launched, confcntlr can be run with or without a human operator, thus eliminating the need to "babysit" the computer while the conference is in session. Security features are included that let you tell confcntlr whether you do or do not want to manually approve actions/setting changes or receive notification when a change has taken place.
sdr will launch confcntlr if you have the correct plugin.
We have compiled this program for Solaris 2.5.1 and Irix 6.2. However, you are welcome to compile the source code on other platforms. We would be interested in hearing from you if you do and getting your website if you choose to put your program on the web. Confcntlr-related questions and feedback can be sent to Deb Agarwal(DAAgarwal@lbl.gov). You may also register with us to receive updates and announcements of confcntlr.
