Base camp on the slopes of Mt. Everest, 18,000 feet above sea level, was the scene of a remarkable study of red-cell stimulation at high altitudes. Lawrence Radiation Laboratory scientist Will Siri, at right, is shown conducting a count of radioactive iron, using a portable scintillation counter. The subject is fellow-climber James Lester, while Gilbert Roberts, another member of the group, assists Siri with the apparatus.
