There is considerable interest around the world in the subject of remote operation of large accelerator facilities. The “Global Accelerator Network” concept has been put forward as a means for inter-regional collaboration in the operation of internationally constructed and operated frontier accelerator facilities. Two ICFA working groups have studied the concept (reports available: http://www.fnal.gov/directorate/icfa/icfa_tforce_reports.html ) . An initial workshop to explore the topic of building a GAN was held in March 2002 at Cornell. This first meeting looked primarily at the accelerator issues involved with building a GAN ( final report). Later this year, September 17-20, 2002, there will be a follow-up to the Cornell Workshop at Shelter Island, New York. The Shelter Island Workshop will focus on Remote Operation of Accelerator Facilities will focus on possible experiments in remote control that are now being widely discussed.
This Collaboration Tools for the GAN Workshop was held at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab on August 26, 2002. The purpose of this Berkeley meeting was to focus on collaborative tools for the GAN and to provide input regarding reasonable collaborative environments to the Remote Operations Workshop at Shelter Island in September. The intent of the meeting is to begin to explore the requirements, use cases, and collaborative tools that are available for use in the GAN environment. We also intend to develop a strawman proposal for the GAN collaborative tools environment. This was a very intense one day meeting and we had an agressive agenda. We limited the number of participants to 12-15 representatives. The participants were evenly split between representatives of the collaboratory tool development projects and representatives from the accelerator (operations, controls, and accelerator physics) community.
The final report from this workshop is available (PDF), (word).
The Shelter Island presentation summarizing the workshop results is also now available (ppt), (pdf).
